Grace Latini Called to the Bar in British Columbia

Grace Latini was called to the Bar in British Columbia on September 17, 2015. Grace will now be able to provide legal advice and support to our clients in British Columbia. Congratulations Grace!

Take our Kids to Work Day 2015

On Wednesday, November 4, 2015, KRMC welcomed the following grade nine students to the firm for Take our Kids to Work Day: Ashlynn Conklin, Elizabeth Alexopoulos, Jamie Kreidstein and Massimo Montesano.

The activities for the day included visiting Toronto Small Claims Court and learning about the different paths available to obtain a career in the legal field. Students also spent time job shadowing with their hosts which provided them with a realistic look at a busy work day at KRMC.

KRMC is proud to announce that Mervyn D. Abramowitz, partner in charge of our Civil Litigation and Insolvency practice group, has been designated by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Certified Specialist in Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law. That is in addition to his prior designation as a Certified Specialist in Civil Litigation. Mervyn becomes one of the few dual Certified Specialists in the province of Ontario. His efforts demonstrate KRMC’s continuing commitment to excellence and achievement, and to the practice of law at the highest levels. Congratulations Mervyn!

KRMC’s Philip Cho Appointed Regional Governor of the International Association of Korean Lawyers

Philip Cho was appointed to the Board of Governors of the International Association of Korean Lawyers (IAKL). Philip will serve as a Regional Governor for the Toronto region for the IAKL. The IAKL is an international organization whose primary purpose is to promote communication and friendship between lawyers of Korean heritage around the world. The IAKL holds annual conferences that bring together participants from Korea, the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, South America, Asia, and other places.

KRMC’s Mervyn D. Abramowitz will preside over OBA’s “Litigating Effectively Before the Commercial List: Practice and Procedure” program

Mervyn D. Abramowitz will be chairing a program on October 6, 2015 put on by the Ontario Bar Association titled “Litigating Effectively Before the Commercial List: Practice and Procedure”. Mervyn will also be speaking at the program and moderating a panel with two senior justices of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Commercial List), Justice Frank Newbould and Justice Laurence Pattillo. The program will be of interest to anyone who has cases from time to time on the Commercial List and wishes to learn more about this specialized court and the benefits from practising on it. Welcome to our second set of articling students!

Today our second and final set of articling students for the 2015/2016 term have arrived at the firm!

Zohar Weinbrand, from the University of Western Ontario, Sara Munkittrick, from Osgoode Hall, and Dave Johnston, from the University of Windsor, have returned to the firm to begin their articles in KRMC’s general stream. For those of you who may not be aware, Zohar, Sara and Dave were employed as summer law students with KRMC last year.

Articling Students 2015-2016

KRMC is pleased to announce that Hilary Chung and Christine Haddad have started with the firm today as our first set of arriving articling students for the 2015/2016 term.

Hilary joins us after attending law school at the University of Western Ontario and Christine after attending law school at Queen’s University. Both will be working in the Personal Injury department.

A big welcome to Hilary and Christine! We look forward to working with you and getting to know you in the coming months.

Mervyn D. Abramowitz Appointed Past Chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section Executive

Mervyn D. Abramowitz will serve as Immediate Past Chair for the upcoming 2015-16 term of the Ontario Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section Executive, having just completed his term as chair of the Section Executive for the 2014-15 term. Mervyn has been involved with the OBA’s Civil Litigation Section Executive for many years and this next year will be his last. He looks forward to seeing the new Executive pick up the baton and move forward with it, noting that there are many talented individuals who will serve, and that as a result, the upcoming term ought to be an interesting one.

Team KRMC Achieves VIP Status – Big Bike Ride for Heart&Stroke

Congratulations to KRMC’s team who rode the Heart&Stroke Big Bike on June 24 th. The team managed to raise over $6,000 in on-line and cash donations in support of the Heart&Stroke Foundation, earning it VIP status by a healthy margin. All the money raised will go toward further research to develop life-saving treatments that bring hope to heart disease and stroke patients, and return more survivors home.

Thank you and congratulations to all of those who rode, and a special thank you to everyone who supported our riders!

KRMC Supports Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto

KRMC continued its long-standing support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto by attending the “Big Night Out Gala”. KRMC was a table sponsor at the event, which was held at the Liberty Grand, Exhibition Place. The Gala, presented by Scotiabank, was also attended by numerous entertainment, business and community leaders. It was a great evening and a successful fundraising event.

Law Slam Tennis Challenge

On Sunday June 7 th, 2015, Mitch Schachter participated in the annual Law Slam Tennis Challenge which was held at the Timberlane Athletic Club. This event has raised over $60,000 for charity over the past four years. Some of the charities that this event supports are: Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO), Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Tennis Canada’s Tennis Matters for Kids program. Congratulations to Mitch and his tennis partner, who won the singles and doubles event this year.

KRMC’s Philip Cho partakes in the 2015 Toronto Korean Film Festival Short Film Competition

Philip Cho sat on the jury for the Short Film Competition at the 2015 Toronto Korean Film Festival, which took place between May 26-May 31. This year’s Short Film competition featured 150 submissions, with six films being selected by TKFF to be evaluated by the jury and to screen at this annual showcase of Korean shorts. http://www.tkff.ca/2015juries.html

On May 2, 2015, KRMC LLP was proud to be a Silver Sponsor at the Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation 2015 Scholarship Night Gala. The KCSF is charitable organization that has awarded scholarships to post-secondary and graduate students since 1978. This year, the KCSF awarded over $70,000 in scholarships and bursaries in addition to providing programs and activities for advancement and leadership development of young people in high school, university and graduates. KRMC’s Philip Cho is serving his third term as Chair of the KCSF.

Mervyn D. Abramowitz to co-chair this year’s Commercial List Retreat on June 3 at the Richmond Hill Golf and Country Club

Each year, this event brings together members of the judiciary, the commercial litigation and insolvency bars and their accounting / trustee colleagues for an education session, followed by lunch and a day on the golf course or at the spa, and an end of day reception. This year, KRMC’s Mervyn D. Abramowitz will be co-chairing the event with Roger Jaipargas of the law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and Daniel Weisz, of the accounting / insolvency firm Collins Barrow Toronto Limited. The education session highlights matters of importance to all those who practise on the Commercial List of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, while the social events that follow provide for an opportunity for the participants to mix and network in an informal setting. The event is jointly sponsored by the Commercial List Users’ Committee (CLUC), the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) and the Ontario Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (OAIRP). Mervyn is a member of CLUC, the chair of the OBA’s civil litigation section executive and a program coordinator for the OBA’s insolvency section executive. Mervyn D. Abramowitz chairs OBA pleadings program

Mervyn D. Abramowitz, who heads up KRMC’s commercial litigation and insolvency practice group, co-chaired the Ontario Bar Association’s program on Drafting the Perfect Pleading: Precedents and More, on April 7, 2015. The program covered the nuts and bolts of pleadings, as well as practice points on amending pleadings and dealing with pleadings motions. A highlight was the panel discussion in which Mervyn posed questions about the appropriate use of pleadings to Justice Katherine van Rensburg of the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Superior Court of Justice. KRMC was proud to be a silver sponsor of the Confederation of Greater Toronto Chinese Business Association’s (CGTCBA) 18th Annual Gala. The gala was held on February 28, 2015 at the Hilton Suites in Markham and was attended by members, friends, and guests of the four Chinese business associations in the Greater Toronto Area (the Toronto Chinese Business Association, Richmond Hill and Markham Chinese Business Association, Scarborough York Region Chinese Business Association, and the Mississauga Chinese Business Association) including many community and business leaders, Canadian politicians, and Chinese and Hong Kong dignitaries.

The CGTCBA was jointly incorporated in 1998 by the Toronto, Richmond Hill and Markham, Scarborough and York Region, and Mississauga business associations. The CGTCBA plays a key role in promoting business and trade between Chinese and mainstream communities by providing its members with opportunities to enhance their competitiveness, fostering strong relationships between the Chinese business community and all levels of government, and by serving as a voice that reflects its members’ needs and concerns.

Mervyn D. Abramowitz will co-chair the OBA’s Insolvency Law section on “Putting on the Red Sash: Observations from the Other Side of the Bench”

Mervyn D. Abramowitz, head of the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Insolvency Law practice group, will co-chair the Ontario Bar Association Insolvency Law section’s annual evening with the judges on February 24, 2015. This year, the program is entitled Putting on the Red Sash: Observations from the Other Side of the Bench, and features three recent appointees to the bench who will share their experiences on what it is like to move from one side of the bar to the other. Mervyn and co-chair Craig Mills will lead the discussion with Justices Wendy Matheson, Alissa Mitchell and Fred Myers, asking them what it was like to make the transition, and how their lives have changed as a result.
