KRMC's Philip Cho Participates in Panel Discussion for Korean Canadian Lawyers Association Continuing Professional Development Program

On November 22, 2014, Philip Cho, spoke on a panel at the inaugural Korean Canadian Lawyers Association continuing professional development program. Philip's panel of senior practitioners, included John Park, president of the KCLA and criminal defence lawyer, and Jae-Yon Jung, a civil litigator. The panel members discussed various professionalism issues to an audience of newer members of the Ontario Bar, including issues relating to dealing with difficult lawyers and dealing with difficult clients.

KRMC partner Mervyn D. Abramowitz, chair of the Ontario Bar Association's Civil Litigation section, acted as Master of Ceremonies on October 16, 2014 at the OBA's Award of Excellence for Civil Litigation dinner. Read More

The event took place at Toronto's Ritz-Carlton Hotel and honoured well-known Toronto litigator Jeffrey Leon. More than 450 people attended the dinner, including several other members of KRMC, as well as former Chief Justice Roy McMurtry and key note speaker Court of Appeal Justice Eleanor Cronk.

Philip Cho and Barbara Damm recently presented at the Law Society's 6-Minute Debtor/Creditor and Insolvency Lawyer CLE program. Read More

Philip's presentation dealt with s. 178(1) of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, and in particular, the Court of Appeal's recent decision in Gray (Re), 2014 ONCA 236. Philip and Lojana Anandarajah also co-authored a paper for the program. Barbara's presentation dealt with Internet Debt Elimination Scams and in particular the landmark decision of Meads v. Meads, 2012 ABQB 571. Barbara also authored a paper for the program.

In addition, Alexander was also appointed as the Corporate Secretary of the association. Established in 1972, the Toronto Chinese Business Association is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting commerce and trade between the Chinese community and the Greater Toronto Area communities.

KRMC is proud to announce that, effective August 15, 2014, Mervyn D. Abramowitz, partner in charge of the firm’s Commercial Litigation and Insolvency practice group, is the new Chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Civil Litigation section. Read More

Mervyn has been involved with the OBA for several years in both the Civil Litigation and Insolvency sections, and now takes on the responsibilities of the chair for the Civil Litigation section. The position is for a one year period. The Civil Litigation section is the largest of the OBA’s 38 different sections and provides a voice for the legal profession’s advocates across Ontario. We congratulate Mervyn on this exciting development and wish him well in the coming year.

This event has raised over $45,000 for charity over the past three years, including Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO), Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Tennis Canada's Tennis Matters for Kids program. Mitch successfully won the singles event.

New Associate to KRMC

We are pleased to welcome Natalie Derbyshire as the newest member of KRMC. Natalie joins us as an associate lawyer in the family law department. Read More

Natalie received her law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005 and she was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2006. She has almost 8 years of experience as a family lawyer. In 2011, Natalie became a certified collaborative lawyer. She routinely assists clients in negotiating domestic contracts, including separation agreement, marriage contracts and cohabitation agreements. Her focus is on resolving issues of custody, access, equalization of property, unjust enrichment and child and spousal support. She also provides clients advice in relation to step-parent adoptions. Natalie recommends cost-effective alternative dispute resolution to her clients, but appreciates that litigation is sometimes unavoidable. She regularly advocates for her clients in provincial and superior courts across the Greater Toronto Area.

The Gala was held on May 3, 2014 at the Granite Club and attended by nearly 300 attendees to celebrate the achievements of the 25 scholarship recipients, and the work of the KCSF. Through KRMC’s Entertainment Sponsorship, the KCSF was able to invite young pianist, Haewoon Yang, to perform at the Gala. Haewoon is a 2010 KCSF Scholar who will be beginning her Doctorate of Music Program at Indiana University this year. The Gala this year was hosted by Global TV reporter, Minna Rhee, and featured a keynote speech by Helen Pak, Creative Strategist for Facebook, and former Creative Director at Saatchi & Saatchi. KRMC lawyer, Philip Cho, is the Chair of the KCSF, which was founded in 1978 to foster education and leadership within the Korean-Canadian community.

This year's 2-day conference explored Korea through the theme "Reimagining the Korean Peninsula: Global Forces, Social Change and Conflict Resolution" by assessing both the agents of change in the two Koreas as well as interrogating Korea's engagement with regional and global forces.

Isida will be preparing legal opinions, researching specific legal questions and reviewing, editing, and commenting on draft reasons for judgment. Twelve candidates from across Canada were selected for the upcoming term. Congratulations Isida!


Mervyn Abramowitz Serves as Guest Panelist in the Mock Oral Board Examinations

Mervyn D. Abramowitz, a partner in the firm's commercial litigation and insolvency group, participated once again this year as a panelist in the mock oral board examinations for the trustee in bankruptcy licencing process. Read More

He also prepared one of the written questions to which the candidates were required to respond. The oral board examinations are part of the licencing process used by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy for new trustees in bankruptcy. Mervyn and KRMC are proud to participate in the ongoing education process of professionals in their chosen area.
The topics covered were probate planning, holding assets in joint names, holding investments in corporate name vs personal name, use of family trusts in estate planning and post-mortem planning when assets are owned through a corporation. The other event speakers were an accountant, Allen Church, CA, of MNP LLP and a financial advisor, Tariq Aziz of Scotia McLeod. Approximately 100 accountants attended the event.
