KRMC Sponsors North York District Chartered Accountants Association (NYDCAA) Speaker Program Event

KRMC sponsored the NYDCAA’s Speaker Program event held at the Donalda Club on October 22, 2013. Over 70 members and guests of the NYDCAA attended the event, which included presentations by three of KRMC’s lawyers. A partner in the Corporate and Commercial Department, spoke on three topics: “Using Primary and Secondary Wills to Reduce Probate Fees”, “Documenting Financial Transactions Involving Trusts”, and “Documenting Leases Between Related Parties”. Alexander Shaw, an associate in the Corporate and Commercial Department, spoke about, “Streamlining Communications Between Lawyers and Accountants on Routine Corporate Matters” and Abigail Romberg, an Associate in the Wills and Estates Department, spoke on the topic, “Client Will Issues You May Not Have Thought About”. Grace Latini, Partner at KRMC, Joins “CIBPA” Foundation Board

September 2013

Grace Latini, a partner in the Creditors’ Rights Department has joined the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association “CIBPA” Foundation Board. Since September 2011, the Foundation has distributed or established an endowment of an estimated $603,000 to over 811 students. The Foundation’s goal is to reach $1 million.

Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation Charity Golf Classic

KRMC has donated a prize for the Korean Canadian Scholarship Foundation Charity Golf Classic at Emerald Hills Golf Club. The proceeds raised from the KCSF Charity Golf Classic will fund bursaries to be awarded by the KCSF in the 2013/2014 academic year. One of our lawyers, Philip Cho, was appointed Chair of the Board of Directors of the KCSF in 2012.

Congratulations to KRMC’s Mervyn Abramowitz who is serving as vice-chair of the Ontario Bar Association Civil Litigation Section and Technology liaison for the Ontario Bar Association Insolvency Law Section. Mervyn continues to serve as the Treasurer of the Canadian Bar Association Bankruptcy, Insolvency and Restructuring Law section and as a member of the Commercial List Users’ Committee.

Heatwave Beach Volleyball Tournament in Support of Sick Kids Hospital

Congratulations to the KRMC Heatwave Beach Volleyball Team “You Got Served!” which, so far, has raised close to $700 in support of Sick Kids Hospital. The team played five games of beach volleyball on Saturday, July 6 and, while they didn’t make the playoffs, they and their supporters had fun and are already talking about next year’s tournament!

A number of lawyers from KRMC attended the 100 th anniversary “Big Night Out Gala”, in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto. KRMC was a table sponsor at the event, which was held at the Allstream Centre, Exhibition Place. Congratulations to the KRMC Big Bike team which raised $3,842.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The team pedaled on a bicycle built for 29 in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and it’s continued research and education. The Gala was held on April 6, 2013 at the Granite Club and attended by over 300 attendees to celebrate the achievements of the 25 scholarship recipients that evening. Our very own Philip Cho is the Chair of the KCSF, which was founded in 1978 to foster education and leadership within the Korean-Canadian community. The Gala also featured a keynote speech by Anita Lee, award-winning and Oscar nominated film producer with the National Film Board of Canada.

Mervyn Abramowitz Serves as Guest Panelist in The Mock Oral Board Examinations

March 22, 2013

Mervyn D. Abramowitz, a partner in the firm’s commercial litigation and insolvency group, was asked to participate last week as a guest panelist in the mock oral board examinations for the trustee in bankruptcy licencing process. The mock oral board examinations are used by candidates for trustee in bankruptcy licences to prepare for the actual board examinations, which themselves are the culmination of a multi-year licencing process. Mervyn was also asked to prepare one of the written questions that would be provided to the candidates in advance for consideration, and to which they were required to respond. On Friday, March 22, Mervyn attended and served as a panelist, along with two trustees, to judge the candidates on their substantive knowledge of bankruptcy and insolvency and their oral presentation skills. It was part of KRMC’s engagement in the insolvency community and our commitment to furthering the education process for young professionals.
